Introduction – Sgt. Howard F. Smith – Honor Escort

He had always been a misfit. He was tired of sleeping under cars, sneaking into his sister’s basement and working in a diner.

He was afraid he would miss his war so had lied about his age to get into the Army. It was the first time he had two of everything – pants, shirts, jackets, underwear – a good warm coat and both shoes and boots.

He had served his time in Austria, and found, after the first thrill of being home in peacetime, that without the service he was still a misfit – so he re-up’d

Being an escort had given him discipline, respect and a sense of belonging. But now, on the way to Franklin Louisiana, with the body of Pfc John Styles, his 76th escort, he is questioning everything; what it means to be a man and a hero. But, now maybe, he can move on, build a life, and even find love.

During the credits:

The film opens with an air shot of a battlefield cemetery in Belgium where a body is being exhumed, the soil is sifted in case anything has gotten separated from the body. Then, the remains are brought to a work room where they are reassembled into a plaster form, which is put in a casket. The casket is put in a shipping case and covered with a flag that is secured with a cinch.

As the titles roll we follow the course of the body to a ship and ultimately to a Brooklyn warehouse along with 300 other flag draped caskets. The camera has been getting closer and closer and is now at, or just below, eye level and we can see of a long row of caskets, and at the end, a soldier, standing at parade rest. Beyond him, out the window, we see the East River and the skyline of lower NY. We hear the commissioning of a special unit of Honor Escorts for the WW II dead. All must have combat experience and have military bearing. The unit is to be quartered in the Brooklyn Army Base.

During the reading of the commission we see Smith, in the barracks, packing a suitcase, with dress uniform, and checking the spare flag in a soft meusette bag, looking around and leaving.

Comissioning of Detachment 5, 1300 A.S.U.

Memo: 1/47, New York

Subject: Honor Escorts for the return of World War II dead.

Enlistments will be called for into Detachment 5, 1300 A.S.U. (Army Special Unit) Brooklyn Army Base Terminal, Brooklyn, New York.

The soldiers of this unit will be spec. Numbered 0566. Requirements: Corporal or higher grade, veteran of overseas combat neat and military appearance.

Note: The war lasted four years and these men, who have fallen in combat, were buried on the battlefield, without the normal burial procedures. Their return necessitates the use of hermetically, sealed caskets. This will, in itself, create numerous problems for the escort. This and other problems will be dealt with in a short training period.
